US Population By Longitude & Latitude

My friend Eddie reminded me of this nice set of figures that made the rounds a few months ago on (and also Reddit).

I thought it would be cool to zoom in on the USA in high detail using data from the 2010 US Census... so that's what I did. As a bonus, the pixels represent the density of ZIP codes in small bins, which essentially track population density.  Enjoy!

  1. Would you be able to use this same method for the world population? That would be interesting to see. That along with a "Guns, Germs, Steel" sort of analysis about the causes and implications of such population distribution.

    1. Yes, absolutely this could be done for World Population - in fact it was originally (see here) done that way using data from 2000 by Bill Rankin. I'd love to do a new version of that worldwide figure if I could find an appropriate data set. Alas, the day job beckons!

  2. Where can I find the code for this?
